National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses

The NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses) is a computer adaptive test that nursing graduates must pass to become licensed as a Registered Nurse in the US and Canada.

In other words, passing the NCLEX-RN is a requirement for anyone wishing to work as a Registered Nurse in these countries.

To be eligible for the NCLEX-RN, candidates must complete a state-approved nursing program. The NCLEX-RN cannot be taken without attending an accredited nursing school.

What is NCLEX-Rn?

The NCLEX-RN is a computer-adaptive licensing exam that evaluates the competency of nursing graduates to become registered nurses in the U.S. and Canada.

The new NCLEX-RN consists of 85 to 150 questions and will stop once your competency level has been determined.

In 2023, U.S. first-time NCLEX-RN test takers had an 88.6% pass rate, while international candidates had a 52.6% pass rate according to the NCSBN.

To pass the NCLEX-RN, you must demonstrate competency above the minimum standard. As you answer questions correctly, the difficulty increases, allowing the exam to determine your passing level with 95% confidence. Success requires both nursing knowledge and critical thinking.

The NCLEX-RN is challenging as it tests critical thinking, decision-making under pressure, and a vast range of nursing knowledge.

Ideally, you’ll take the NCLEX-RN only once. If needed, you can retest 45 days after your previous exam. Candidates can take the exam up to 8 times per year, depending on the state.
